While we are all about the natural volume sometimes we want to get our strands sleek and slick, but this can prove to be a challenge when humidity strikes. Chatting with Chiara McCarthy at the Hersham Salon she takes the gloves off this autumn to fight the frizz with some easy steps and tips.
The moment you step out of the shower the fight to avoid frizz begins. This occurs when the cuticle layer of your hair is raised resulting in a dry and fuzzy appearance. If you are air-drying Chiara recommends using a towel to avoid pulling the strands apart. Try blotting the hair which reduces the drying time and allows for the natural moisture to be retained. When drying, we protect the hair with Alterna’s Bamboo Anti-Breakage Thermal Protectant which will help reduce breakage.
Frizz is your hair’s way of reaching out to the atmosphere to swell and capture more moisture. Before you exit the shower give your hair the moisture it needs, resulting in a less likely frizz attack afterwards. If you are dealing with severe frizz, using a professional home hair care shampoo and conditioner will greatly reduce the fight and leave your hair with a frizz free texture.
TOP TIP: To retain the moisture and not allow the cotton in your pillow to absorb any further moisture by putting the hair up in a loose bun then wrap up in a silk scarf reducing friction throughout the night. Chiara also recommends using a hydrating mask once a week and to keep your hair fresh, use only conditioner twice-a-week by applying and rinsing which will light cleanse the hair without removing the natural oils. Always use sulphate-free glycerine-packed shampoo and don’t skip the conditioner.
All the salons carry a range of products to help combat the frizz. We recommend Alterna Bamboo Smooth trio of Anti-Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner with the Anti-Breakage Thermal Protectant. For a more purse friendly purchase and a great alternative is Living Proof frizz Shampoo and Conditioner with the Weightless styling spray which weightlessly blocks humidity and smooths without build up by not containing any heavy silicones or oils.
